Store Bought Cake Makeover! | How To Make A Grocery Store Cake Look More Expensive!
We all have events to host this Spring & Summer, and whether it be Easter, birthday parties, showers, etc, chances are you’re going to need a cake!
If you’re like me and one of your goals for this year was to budget, doing a store bought cake makeover (or cakeover if you will), is a great hack to make an inexpensive cake look SO much better!
To start this cakeover, I visited my local grocery store to see what I could find for an inexpensive cake. I ended up finding this $7 carrot cake, which was the perfect size, shape and colour for what I wanted to do
Before you go searching for a cake, make sure to first come up with an idea of what you want to do with it. Write down the shape, size, flavour and colour you’re looking for.
Now, there’s nothing wrong with the way this cake was decorated. The carrot is cute (and very Easter like), and the icing was fine, but if you’re planning an event with a specific theme or one with a fancier vibe, doing a cakeover will give you that Pinterest worthy look you want for WAY less.
After I found my cake, I headed over to the flower department to check out their discount flowers. This bouquet was 50% off, so I paid around $4 for it.
Once I got home, I separated the flowers, got rid of any dead leaves, and trimmed the stems.
Add A Cute Topper
The first look I did was this bunny look, inspired by the original Easter feel of the cake. I left the icing alone and simply added the bunny figurine (that I bought at the dollar store last Spring), and a couple sprigs of fresh baby’s breath!
Re-Frost It
I bought a small container of store brand icing in the same flavour as the original icing to cover the sides for my next few looks.
Add Fresh Fruit
While at the grocery store, I bought a small container of discount mixed fruit for around $3. For the next 2 looks pictured, I used leaves from the flowers and blueberries to create a fresh new look.
This look would work best with a vanilla, lemon, or fruit cake.
Add Fresh Flowers
I LOVE fresh flowers on cakes! If you don’t want the stems to go into the actual cake, insert straws first and put the stems into the straws.
All together, I spent around $16 to make all of these looks!
