What Is "Clean Girl Aesthetic" | The Trend That's Taking Over TikTok & Why I Love It

If you’re a frequent TikTok scroller, you’ve probably seen people posting more about “clean girl” aesthetic lately. It’s a very specific vibe, look, and lifestyle that seems to be following the same wave as “that girl” aesthetic. I’m 32, and if you’re in your 30s like I am, you may not read into these trends, as they seem to be portrayed by the younger crowd a bit more- BUT I actually really love this vibe, and how it ties into self care.

Ironically enough, it’s not about living a “clean” life, as in chemical free, all natural etc- it’s more about the vibe. With that being said, I’ve also been researching more about clean brands that I want to try, but that will be in another post. Clean girl aesthetic is basically a very minimalistic “clean” look, with elements of self care tied in, to create an overall lifestyle. I think the reason I love this vibe is because it’s naturally where I’ve been heading with my life and look anyway, so it feels like a natural transition for me. This lifestyle feels very grown up, and like a good next step for my age. It’s all about cleaning things up (looks and lifestyle wise), and taking care of yourself.

The Look

So, what does “clean girl” aesthetic look like? Here are some key elements I’ve noticed.

Dewy, minimal makeup

The make-up look is natural and glowy. Neat fluffy brows, dewy skin, tinted moisturizer, a bit of blush, very minimal eye make-up, and lip oils are some key elements I’ve noticed for make-up.

Simple hairstyles

A popular “clean girl” hairstyle right now is a slicked back bun (probably with Olaplex or a leave in conditioner), but if you’re like me and don’t like having your hair slicked back, you could also just wear your hair down, or however you want, as long as it has that fresh and clean look. The claw clip has also made a comeback in a huge way with this style.

Gold minimal jewelry

The clean girl wears simple jewelry (gold is most popular right now)- small hoops or studs for earrings, dainty layered necklaces, etc. Stores like Mejuri are becoming more popular right now as this trend takes hold. I actually bought a paid of small gold vermeil hoops from Mejuri recently, and love them.

Neutral clothing Colours & effortless style

Neutral colours are very in with this trend- beige, white, grey, black, navy, blush, etc. Some other staples I’ve seen are matching sets, crew neck sweaters or half zips with jeans (or biker shorts), button up blouses, and white sneakers. The vibe is to look effortlessly clean and put together.

Less is more

This lifestyle is all about the “less is more” mindset. This will be different for everyone, but it could mean having clean looking neutral nails, no gaudy makeup, minimal dainty jewelry that matches instead of loud mismatched jewelry, no huge logos or sayings on your clothes, etc

the lifestyle

So, this is where the trend really shines in my opinion. It’s very focused on living a healthier lifestyle with ample self care. Some key things I’ve noted about this lifestyle are:

  • Eating healthier, making more smoothies, cooking at home, etc

  • A heavy focus on skincare/hair care & creating a routine. Using nightly lip masks, face oils, lash serum, hair masks, conditioning treatments, etc

  • Reading more & listening to more audio books

  • Drinking more water. An emotional support water bottle is KEY

  • Being active- walking more, playing tennis, yoga etc

  • Avoiding drama and focusing on yourself

  • Keeping your space (car, house, etc) decluttered & clean

It’s all about taking care of yourself and focusing on your goals, and we can all use a little more of that. In our own house, Kris and I have been on a decluttering kick lately, which is leading into Spring cleaning. We’ve recently donated a TON of clothes and other items. Value Village in my city is currently closed due to a fire, so I’ve been posting free items on our local “buy nothing” group, and we’ve been donating a lot that way. Mason has also gotten on board with decluttering, choosing items he doesn’t play with any more to donate to children in need. We also recently donated two garbage bags full of clothes that he outgrew to a woman with two sons who needed them. Decluttering in general has been extremely cathartic to me, and I can’t wait to see what else we can donate.

Getting rid of clutter also makes your home easier to clean, so I’ve been enjoying that benefit as well. We had Covid last month, and before that we had a biweekly housekeeper come in. Due to us having Covid, and her recently moving, we haven’t had her in lately, and I’m still debating on whether or not to continue with services. She was amazing, but our home is feeling much more manageable the more that we declutter. I’m still following the Go Clean Co cleaning methods, and highly recommend checking them out.
