This gingerbread recipe was my great grandmother Ada Spencer’s. She passed it onto her daughter-in-law Elizabeth (my nan), who is still making it for us today! Last year for my birthday, my mom made the dough, and sent it home with us for Mason and I to make. I didn’t actually have the recipe myself, so a few days ago I begged my mom to get it from nan so I could share it with all of you! This recipe makes really soft gingerbread cookies that your entire family will love!

The Recipe

  • 1 Cup Mollasses

  • 1 Cup Shortening

  • 1 Cup Brown Sugar

  • 1 Egg

  • 1 tsp Salt

  • 4 Level tsp Baking Soda in 2/3 Cup Of Hot Water

  • 4 1/2 Cups Of Flour

  • 1 tsp Cream Of Tartar (In Flour)

  • 4 Level tsp Sugar

  • Candy Of Choice

Instructions

The instructions don’t mention how to mix the ingredients, so just follow the regular rules for mixing wet and dry ingredients separately.

  • Once mixed, roll into ball and place in fridge overnight

  • Roll the dough out in the morning and use cookie cutters to shape into cookies!

  • Save 1 cup of flour to roll cookies in. This keeps them from sticking to the counter top, the cookie cutters, etc. Place flour on counter before rolling the dough, and sprinkle on when needed.

  • Decorate with m&ms, sprinkles and candy of choice.

  • Bake at 325-350 until a toothpick comes out clean.
